Morgan Silk has been creating photographic images since the mid-1980s after graduating from Blackpool & Fylde College. He began his career as a creative re-toucher working alongside photographers for advertising clients, and then began to experiment with his own photography, predominantly colour landscapes, his skills as a re-toucher continuing to be employed to give an unusual and personal touch to the finished work.
Morgan is now a highly successful photographer in his own right. His highly acclaimed project Zoo won an Association of Photographers Gold Award and an Honourable Mention at the International Photo Awards (2009). His portrait of Jake Tassell from the series ‘After The Riots’ was selected as one of the 6 limited edition covers of 2009’s Creative Review Photography Annual. The new series presented here was all shot at the US Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama on a visit made in 2014. The series recently won ‘Award of Excellence in Communication’ at the Arts Photography Annual Awards 2016.
“Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by the moon landings and shuttle missions of the 70’s and 80’s. I was particularly drawn to the enigma that is the Saturn V Rocket which is on permanent exhibition in its own massive super-hangar. Its history as well as its sheer physical presence really captivated me. It is an absolute beast and also a work of art, holding the record for the tallest, heaviest, and most powerful rocket ‘ever brought to operational status’. It was successfully launched 13 times between 1968 -1972 and became the benchmark by which all rockets are measured. To date, it remains the only launch vehicle able to transport human beings beyond low Earth orbit and I felt privileged to have been able to photograph this monumental machine that took 24 men to the moon.” To see more of Morgan Silk’s work, please click here
